About PFAS & emerging contaminant remediation

Two problems shape the set on Halo. PFAS is attacked from both ends, six entries removing or destroying it and three designing it out of a material in the first place. Separately, four groups have built a way to read acrylamide in drinking water at parts per billion. On Halo it spans four groups, including destroying and adsorbing PFAS, detecting acrylamide in drinking water, and other contaminants and analysis.

Stage of development. Work on pfas & emerging contaminant remediation on Halo is split between university programs and companies. 37% of the solutions are in market. Sponsored research and co-development are the usual partnering routes, and about 52% of the solutions that state terms offer pilot engagements.

Three trends in pFAS and emerging contaminant remediation on Halo

PFAS is worked from both ends. Six entries remove or destroy it: a plasma reactor, biochar from citrus peel, a regenerable polymeric adsorbent, covalent organic frameworks that adsorb then photodegrade, cotton-derived nanocrystals, and algae. Three more remove the need entirely, offering PFAS-free barrier chemistry for membranes and fibers. Removal and substitution are both being sold to the same regulation.

Four Raman platforms for one molecule. Acrylamide in drinking water drew four detection entries and three of them use surface-enhanced Raman: a colloidal metasurface in an elastomer stamp reading one dried droplet, a photonic grating flowing through in real time, and Raman with machine learning at 0.1 ppb. The fourth uses silver nanoparticle aggregation visible to the eye. One request, four optical answers.

Emerging means the analysis is the bottleneck. One entry offers nothing but analytical services for PFAS, 1,4-dioxane, microplastics and VOCs, and several others lead with a detection limit against a regulatory threshold. For contaminants named in the last few years, knowing the concentration is often harder and more commercially useful than removing it.
