About industrial wastewater treatment

Recovery, not disposal, is what most of the work on Halo is about. Membranes pull back solvents and acid, magnetic nanoparticles and bioreactors take out nitrogen and phosphorus and sell them on, algae are grown on the stream, and several entries exist only to get the water back. On Halo it spans 7 groups, including membranes and separation, photocatalysis and advanced oxidation, and recovering nutrients from the stream.

Stage of development. Work on industrial wastewater treatment on Halo is split between university programs and companies. 41% of the solutions are in market. Sponsored research and co-development are the usual partnering routes, and about 57% of the solutions that state terms offer licensing.

Three trends in industrial wastewater treatment solutions on Halo

The stream is treated as a source. Four entries recover nitrogen and phosphorus and sell them on, one as fertilizer and one alongside hydrogen from the same electrolysis. Two more grow microalgae on the wastewater and turn it into biocrude. Three others recover the water: a MOF desiccant on waste heat, a hydrogel holding eight times its own mass inside a steel plant, and a machine that splits ink effluent into a cake and washwater.

Sunlight is doing the oxidation. Three of five advanced oxidation entries run on solar energy with no stirring and no added power: a floating photocatalyst reaching 91% degradation of naphthenic acids in six hours, a core-shell semiconducting polymer for nitrate, and concave microlens arrays concentrating light into the reactor. The other two use plasma and Fenton chemistry, and both name PFAS or virus loads.

Separation is chosen by what comes back. Every membrane entry names its recovered product, not its rejection rate. Sulfuric acid dewatered past the azeotrope, alcohols and ketones pulled out by pervaporation, lactic acid separated electrochemically, a nanofiltration cut-off tunable across an order of magnitude. Treatment and process recovery are the same equipment, sold to the same operator for two reasons.
