Advanced nanofiber coatings, enriched with bioactive compounds, enhance the shelf life of fresh produce by controlling spoilage microorganisms and decreasing enzyme activity. Suitable for avocados, bananas, lemons, and star fruits, with proven effectiveness and a TRL of 5.

Overview

This innovative solution employs nanofiber coatings made from biopolymers, enriched with bioactive compounds such as plant extracts and biocontrol agents, to significantly extend the shelf life of fresh produce. Utilizing electrospinning and solution blow spinning techniques, these coatings effectively control phytopathogens and reduce spoilage. They have shown high efficacy in prolonging the freshness of avocados, bananas, lemons, and star fruits by reducing the incidence and severity of postharvest diseases.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Nanofibers produced through electrospinning and solution blow spinning ensure uniform application of bioactives.
  • Bioactive compounds like polyphenol-rich plant extracts and biocontrol agents enhance antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.
  • Proven reductions of 70-100% in spoilage and disease severity.

Applications:

  • Suitable for a range of fresh produce, including avocados, bananas, lemons, and star fruits.
  • Potential for adaptation to other fresh products through tailored coatings.
Technology readiness level

The technology is at TRL 5, having undergone validation in laboratory settings and demonstrating significant effectiveness in extending the shelf life of selected fruits. Future validation will focus on commercial condition testing to further enhance effectiveness and adaptability.

About Tecnológico Nacional de México

Tecnológico Nacional de México is a national public system of technological institutes operating across the country, combining large‑scale engineering education with applied research. Industry engagement is embedded through a for‑credit professional residency required for undergraduates, placing students in companies to deliver scoped projects under joint academic and external supervision. Campuses maintain Technology Management and Industry Liaison offices that broker collaborations, and a multi‑campus incubation network supports venture creation and early prototyping. Projects are funded through competitive programs administered by TecNM and external sponsors. Technology transfer and IP support through liaison offices and incubators streamline sponsored research and commercialization.
