About fragrance development

Volatility is the entire problem on Halo. Seventeen entries slow a scent down in a topical product, using microcapsules, Pickering emulsions, liquid crystalline lipid matrices, zein, nanocellulose or a dual reservoir. A separate group makes the molecule itself with enzymes, where extraction would once have been the only route. On Halo it spans four groups, including structuring a formulation to hold scent, encapsulating a volatile, and making the fragrance molecule.

Stage of development. Work on fragrance development on Halo comes mostly from companies. 43% of the solutions are in market. Co-development and licensing are the usual partnering routes, and about 35% of the solutions that state terms offer supply and purchase.

Three trends in fragrance development on Halo

Seventeen ways to slow a molecule down. Microcapsules from hollow yeast cell walls, PEG-b-PLA micelles, alginate microparticles, electrostatic spray drying; and on the formulation side Pickering emulsions stabilized by flavonoids, a lyotropic liquid crystalline lipid matrix, zein, nanocellulose in three forms, and a dual reservoir giving impact then longevity. One problem, seventeen materials.

Topical, and often medicinal. Several entries name a cough suppressant, an analgesic or an OTC topical, and not a perfume. The same requirement drives both: a volatile applied to skin evaporates in minutes, and the product is judged on how long it lasts. Fragrance longevity research and OTC topical delivery turn out to be one field.

Enzymes making the molecule. Seven entries produce the fragrance compound itself, and four use biology to do it: engineered P450s for nootkatone, novel enzymes for natural-grade lactones, precision fermentation that regenerates SAM to make methylation cheap, and cell-free cascades running on an industrial waste stream. A natural-grade label and a synthetic cost are what these are chasing.

Frequently asked questions

What is fragrance development?

Fragrance development covers holding a volatile compound in a product long enough to smell it, and making the molecule in the first place. It spans encapsulation of volatiles, formulation chemistry that structures a scent into a topical, biocatalytic and fermentation routes to a fragrance molecule, and the prediction and release-control platforms around them. Fragrance houses and consumer goods manufacturers are the buyers.

What are examples of fragrance development?

Four examples of fragrance development solutions on Halo include:

  • A high internal phase emulsion holding fragrance oil and metering it out. (Cornell University)
  • Solvent-free PEG-b-PLA micelles taking a high fragrance oil load. (East Tennessee State University)
  • Novel enzymes making natural-grade lactones from renewable fatty acids. (Aminoverse B.V.)
  • Models the composition, rheology and volatility relationship together. (Polymerize)

What are the latest fragrance development innovations?

Over the past 90 days, researchers and innovators on Halo have added these fragrance development solutions:
