About plastic recycling technology

Two bottlenecks account for most of the work on Halo. Sorting is one, answered by six systems using AI vision, hyperspectral imaging, tactile sensing and air jets. The other is what to do with material once recovered, where eight entries work on making recycled resin behave and six convert it into wax or lubricant. On Halo it spans six groups, including processing recycled resin, sorting and identifying material, and chemical recycling into a product.

Stage of development. Work on plastic recycling technology on Halo comes mostly from companies. 32% of the solutions are in market. Co-development and sponsored research are the usual partnering routes, and about 52% of the solutions that state terms offer pilot engagements.

Three trends in plastic recycling solutions on Halo

Four routes from HDPE to wax. Pyrolysis with catalytic cracking, continuous extrusion over zeolite catalysts, a solvent-free continuous flow process at over 90% yield, and temperature gradient thermolysis. All four take post-consumer HDPE and make paraffin wax, and a fifth makes lubricant base stock. Recycled HDPE is abundant and low value; wax is neither.

Sorting is a sensing problem. Six entries identify material on a moving stream, and each picks a different signal: optical and spectral imaging, hyperspectral paired with tactile sensing, multi-sensor adaptive separation, and AI vision driving either robotics or air jets. One targets automotive shredder light fraction specifically, which is the hardest mixed stream there is.

Multilayer film has five answers and no winner. Supercritical delamination and de-inking, low-energy nanopurification, solvent-targeted recovery and precipitation twice, and a compatibilizer that bonds the layers in use and then helps separate them. The layers exist because each does a job; unmaking them is the reason flexible packaging mostly is not recycled.

Frequently asked questions

What are plastic recycling solutions?

Plastic recycling technology covers getting a usable polymer back out of a waste stream. It spans automated sorting and material identification, separation of multilayer films, chemical routes that convert a polymer into wax or lubricant, the processing that brings recycled resin back to specification, mechanical reprocessing, and polymers designed to degrade on purpose. Recyclers, converters and brand owners are the buyers.
