Ex Seed

Superior isomaltulose production using engineered pichia pastoris

Technology
In development
Company

A novel yeast strain, Pichia pastoris, engineered to produce isomaltulose with high efficiency and low enzyme costs. The yeast expresses high sucrose isomerase activity, enabling cost-effective, high-yield production. Ideal for licensing and co-development.

Overview

Ex Seed has developed an innovative approach to isomaltulose production using an engineered strain of Pichia pastoris yeast. This yeast is designed to express high activity levels of sucrose isomerase on its cell surface while being unable to consume sucrose itself. This unique characteristic allows for the production of isomaltulose with outstanding productivity and efficiency. The yeast's ability to self-produce sucrose isomerase and its recyclability significantly reduce enzyme costs, making the process economically attractive.

Technical specifications

The core of this technology is the genetic engineering of Pichia pastoris to display sucrose isomerase on the cell wall. Key features include:

  • High sucrose isomerase activity: Ensures maximal conversion efficiency of sucrose to isomaltulose.
  • Recyclability: The yeast can be used multiple times with negligible enzyme cost, enhancing sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
  • High yield: Due to Pichia pastoris's inability to consume sucrose, the process maintains a high yield of isomaltulose.
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 6, this technology has been demonstrated in relevant environments and is poised for immediate licensing. Future validation includes optimizing the process with more complex substrates like molasses, expected within 6 months.

About Ex Seed

Founded in 2023, Ex Seed is a deep-tech food startup from Bulgaria focusing on plant protein innovation. The founders combined chemical engineering expertise with a sustainability ethos to tackle waste from sunflower oil production – a significant industry in Eastern Europe. Ex Seed is part of an incubator program and is gaining attention for promoting sunflower protein as the next big plant protein.
