Innovative process for converting recycled HDPE into high-quality wax using supercritical CO₂ and tailored catalysts, enhancing efficiency and sustainability in plastic recycling.
This cutting-edge process leverages supercritical CO₂ as a green solvent to selectively depolymerize recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) into valuable waxes. By using supercritical CO₂, this method capitalizes on its superior solvation and tunable transport properties, allowing for precise control over the depolymerization process. The introduction of catalysts further enhances the selective breakdown of HDPE, resulting in a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly conversion process that supports a circular economy.
Currently at TRL 3, this technology is undergoing experimental proof of concept. Future validation phases include catalyst screening, depolymerization trials, kinetics measurement, and environmental assessments to further develop and scale the process.
Ruhr‑Universität Bochum is a large, comprehensive public research university in Germany’s Ruhr metropolitan region. Industry engagement is embedded through co‑located applied research institutes and shared labs, a nearby research and technology park, and a startup center for spinouts and collaboration. Clinical translation is enabled by a university hospital network linking multiple teaching hospitals, providing access to patients, trials, and real‑world validation environments. Research is supported by competitive funding from the German Research Foundation, federal and state ministries, and European Union programs. A dedicated technology transfer office manages IP, licensing, and standardized collaboration agreements to accelerate partnerships.
