SeaWeave offers a sustainable, compostable alternative to polyolefin liners using seaweed-based biocomposite fibres. Combining seaweed-based thermoplastic starch and PLA, it ensures hydrophilicity, strength, and premium handfeel, ideal for infant-facing materials.
SeaWeave introduces an innovative approach to sustainable inner liner materials by utilizing seaweed-based biocomposite fibers. This solution marries the natural benefits of seaweed-based thermoplastic starch (swTPS) with polylactic acid (PLA) to create a compostable, high-performance spunbond nonwoven. Offering hydrophilicity and a soft, cool feel from swTPS, coupled with strength and durability from PLA, SeaWeave is designed for applications needing both comfort and environmental responsibility, such as infant diapers and personal care products.
Currently at Technology Readiness Level 4, SeaWeave has been validated for melt spinning and is undergoing pilot spunbond trials. Future steps include optimizing thermal calendering, conducting performance testing specific to diaper applications, and assessing compostability according to ASTM D6400 standards.
