University

University of Alberta researchers have developed a rapid, efficient lignin conversion process producing oligomers for coatings and biopolymers for high-strength adhesives. These renewable materials can be tuned for compostability or biodegradability, offering sustainable alternatives for industrial applications.

Overview

This solution offers renewable adhesives and coatings derived from lignin, a major byproduct of the pulp, paper, and bioethanol industries. The research team has developed a rapid and highly efficient conversion process that transforms lignin into oligomers and monomers suitable for producing high-strength adhesives and functional coatings. A key advantage of these lignin-based materials is that their properties can be tuned to be compostable or biodegradable, addressing growing demand for sustainable alternatives to petroleum-derived adhesives and coatings across multiple industries.

Technical specifications
  • Rapid lignin conversion process that efficiently transforms lignin into oligomers and monomers
  • Oligomer-based coatings produced directly from converted lignin for surface protection applications
  • Biopolymers synthesized from lignin monomers with controlled molecular properties enabling high-strength adhesive performance
  • Tunable end-of-life characteristics allowing materials to be engineered for compostability or biodegradability depending on application requirements
  • Renewable feedstock utilizing lignin, an abundant and underused byproduct from existing bio-refining operations
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at an early-to-mid stage of development. Initial trials have been completed, and conversion conditions for transforming lignin into oligomers and monomers have been optimized. The team is actively working on polymer synthesis. Future validation efforts will focus on testing the oligomers and biopolymers as functional adhesives, evaluating coating performance, and confirming biodegradability and compostability of the resulting materials. The research group is open to collaboration with industry partners interested in advancing these renewable materials toward commercial application.
