A sustainable packaging innovation using recycled PET (rPET) to create reusable and returnable consumer containers. This solution reduces single-use plastic waste, supports circular economy principles, and offers measurable environmental benefits through life cycle assessment, consumer adoption studies, and industry pilot validation.

Overview

This solution addresses the global plastic waste crisis by introducing reusable and returnable consumer packaging made from recycled PET (rPET). By replacing single-use PET containers with durable rPET-based alternatives that can be returned, cleaned, and reused, the offering aims to significantly reduce plastic waste, lower carbon emissions, and advance circular economy practices in the packaging industry.

The value proposition centers on three pillars: environmental sustainability through reduced reliance on virgin plastic, consumer engagement via tangible eco-friendly choices supported by loyalty incentives, and industry alignment with increasingly stringent regulatory and corporate sustainability targets. Manufacturers benefit from reduced continuous production needs, while consumers gain a practical way to participate in waste reduction.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • rPET material formulations evaluated for barrier properties, chemical resistance, and mechanical durability using FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, and mechanical testing instruments
  • Reusable and returnable container designs developed in collaboration with packaging design experts, featuring easy-clean surfaces and leak-proof closures
  • Life cycle assessment (LCA) comparing carbon footprint, energy consumption, and waste generation against traditional single-use PET packaging
  • Consumer behavior analysis through surveys, focus groups, and feedback mechanisms to measure adoption rates and identify barriers
  • Recycling rate analysis comparing rPET reusable containers with single-use alternatives to validate circularity
  • Regulatory compliance verification for food contact safety standards and international equivalents

Research and validation approach:

  • Comprehensive literature review to identify best practices and research gaps
  • Pilot studies with consumer groups to assess feasibility and acceptance
  • Industry case studies with real-world implementation partners
  • Longitudinal studies to measure long-term environmental and behavioral impact
  • Comparative analysis against alternative eco-friendly materials such as bioplastics and compostables
Technology readiness level

The solution is currently at an early-to-mid stage of development. Research activities include material testing and characterization of rPET formulations, prototype design, and consumer behavior studies. Pilot studies and industry collaborations are underway to validate feasibility and environmental impact.

A 24-month research plan is in progress, covering material characterization, prototyping, life cycle assessment, industry case studies, regulatory compliance assessment, and consumer adoption analysis. The project leverages established laboratory infrastructure at the Eco-technology lab, including FTIR spectroscopy, TGA, DSC, and mechanical testing equipment, along with partnerships with local recycling companies and waste management facilities. Upon completion of validation phases, the solution will be positioned for industry pilot deployment and broader commercial adoption.
