Innovative UV irradiation technique modulates intensity, pulse duration, and wavelength to disrupt microbial growth and resistance in wheat flour, enhancing disinfection efficacy.

Overview

This reconditioned UV irradiation technique offers a novel approach to disinfecting wheat flour by modulating the intensity, pulse duration, and wavelengths of UV light. Unlike constant UV methods, this technique uses a dynamic pattern of UV exposure, inspired by the Bucha effect, to disrupt the normal growth and resistance mechanisms of microorganisms such as E. coli. This innovative method has the potential to significantly enhance the disinfection process of flour, ensuring safety and reducing microbial resistance.

Technical specifications
  • UV Modulation: The technique involves altering UV intensity, pulse duration, and wavelengths (between UVC and UVB) to create an irregular exposure pattern.
  • Microbial Disruption: The blinking UV light at random durations and intensities disrupts microbial colonization by creating an unpredictable environment.
  • Equipment Setup: The system includes a UV lamp, optic chopper for modulation, and a programmable power source to adjust UV light intensity.
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 3, this technology is in the experimental proof-of-concept stage. Future validation involves setting up the UV equipment in a laboratory environment to conduct detailed experiments, with samples evaluated by either the flour company or a third-party contractor.
