A cutting-edge spectroscopy solution for real-time detection and quantification of free water on potatoes and conveyor belts using deep UV Raman and fluorescence techniques, initially validated with the RPL200 instrument and moving towards a prototype inline system.
Photon Systems, Inc. is developing an innovative solution utilizing deep UV Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy for real-time detection and quantification of free water on potatoes and conveyor belts. This technology builds on our experience with the SHERLOC instrument on Mars, applying similar principles to differentiate free water from water bound within potatoes, as well as distinguishing it from water on conveyor belts. This capability is essential for optimizing production processes in the food industry.
Our solution leverages deep UV lasers to detect vibrational bonds associated with water, allowing precise differentiation between free water and water bound to surfaces or within materials. The spectral intensity correlates with water volume, enabling accurate quantification. The system uses native fluorescence from potatoes to further distinguish water sources. Based on the RPL200 lab-grade instrument, the proposed prototype will be compact, without moving parts, and operate at distances of 100-300 mm. It can be mounted on a linear or rotary stage for comprehensive scanning, utilizing automated data processing methods for efficient results.
Currently at TRL 3, the technology has been validated in laboratory settings with the RPL200 instrument. Future plans include collaboration with industry partners like Pepisco to develop a tailored prototype inline system for operational environments, ensuring effective implementation and data integration.
