A pyrolysis system designed for thermal decomposition of carbonous waste streams to produce syngas, biochar, and tar. This process converts residuals into valuable chemical precursors and fuels under controlled conditions without oxygen.

Overview

This innovative pyrolysis technology offers a sustainable solution for converting carbonous waste streams into valuable chemical precursors and fuels. By leveraging the thermal decomposition process, this system transforms residuals—primarily plastics, paper, and inorganics—into syngas, biochar, and tar. The syngas, rich in carbon monoxide and hydrogen, can be used in the chemical industry for producing ethane, propane, and polymer derivatives, providing a green alternative to traditional petrochemical processes.

Technical specifications

Key components of the pyrolysis system:

  • Conditioning: Stabilizes stream flow and homogenizes particle size.
  • Feeding: Preheats materials and introduces them into the pyrolytic reactor.
  • Pyrolysis reactor: Operates at 400-700°C to achieve thermal decomposition, separating gas, solid, and liquid products.
  • Syngas purification: Utilizes an adsorption tower to eliminate impurities and enhance CO and H2 concentrations.
  • Storage: Involves compression and temperature control for syngas, with adequate storage solutions for tar and biochar.

The pilot system processes 10 kg batches with a composition of 80% plastics, 10% paper, and 10% inorganics, handling moisture levels of 20-40%.

Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 3, the system is in the early stages of development. Future validation plans include a comprehensive four-stage research calendar focusing on stream characterization, reactor setup, auxiliary system design, and full process implementation. These stages will ensure the technology's readiness for larger scale applications and potential commercial deployment.
