Innovative encapsulation technology for probiotics using plant nanoparticle-stabilized emulsions and spray drying to enhance stability and controlled release in the gastrointestinal tract.
This cutting-edge technology focuses on encapsulating probiotics within oil-in-water Pickering emulsions stabilized by plant nanoparticles, enhancing their stability and ensuring controlled release in the gastrointestinal tract. The process utilizes a 2-step spray drying method to produce dried, redispersible oil powders that can be coated with pharmaceutical-grade materials like Eudragit for targeted release, making it suitable for low pH beverage applications.
Currently at TRL 4, this technology has been validated in laboratory settings with ongoing efforts to optimize formulation and assess stability, shelf-life, and performance in realistic conditions.
UBC is a comprehensive public research university with major campuses in Vancouver and the Okanagan, among Canada’s largest and most internationally connected. Industry engages through a co-op talent pipeline and collaborative research spaces that include co-located clinical settings and on‑campus testbeds. A dedicated technology transfer office brokers partnerships, manages IP and licensing, and is complemented by an active venture accelerator and incubator network. Research is supported by competitive funding from Canada’s Tri‑Council agencies (NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC) and infrastructure investments from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, alongside provincial and industry sponsorship.
