A sustainable, polysaccharide-based coating for paper packaging that improves water, oxygen, and grease barriers. Ideal for food and pharmaceutical packaging, offering biodegradability and non-toxicity with potential for industrial-scale application.

Overview

This innovative solution introduces a polysaccharide-based coating designed to enhance the barrier properties of paper packaging. The coating, which is water-based and contains less than 10% additives, significantly improves resistance to water vapor, oxygen, and grease permeation. The core of this technology lies in its sustainability, leveraging biobased polymers that are non-toxic, biodegradable, and readily available, making it an ideal candidate for use in food and pharmaceutical packaging.

Technical specifications
  • Material Composition: The coating primarily consists of cellulose derivatives with less than 10% additives.
  • Application Method: Applied using a casting method or a wet film applicator rod.
  • Barrier Improvements: Enhanced protection against water vapor, oxygen, and grease.
  • Applications: Suitable for food packaging, medical, and pharmaceutical sectors due to its biodegradable and non-toxic nature.
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at TRL 4, indicating that it has been validated in a lab environment. Future plans include further testing of mechanical properties such as bending and sealing, as well as scaling up to industrial applications for real-world testing.
