Revolutionary biodegradable thermoplastic resin blends PLA with allyl-functionalized polyesters, enhancing flexibility and enabling foaming for lightweight, recyclable products. Ideal for applications requiring sustainability and recyclability, with growth potential to TRL4.
The proposed solution is a groundbreaking biodegradable thermoplastic resin designed for injection molding. It combines polylactic acid (PLA) with LoopCO₂’s unique allyl-functionalized liquid polyesters, acting as reactive plasticizers. This innovative blend enhances elongation and facilitates foaming, achieving densities below 1 while maintaining recyclability and compostability. The "plasticize–foam–lock" process stabilizes the foam using a mild radical initiator, ensuring the resin remains a recyclable thermoplastic rather than a permanent thermoset. This technology is particularly suited for applications demanding lightweight, sustainable materials.
The technology is currently at TRL2, with foundational concepts like monomer synthesis, self-crosslinking, and foaming demonstrated. Future validation aims to achieve TRL4, involving optimization of blends, pilot-scale injection molding, and comprehensive recycling and regulatory testing. Partners are sought to assist in pilot molding, recycling simulations, and regulatory assessments to accelerate development.
