The PEG-assist encapsulation platform uses a solvent-free PEG-b-PLA micelle/nanoencapsulation method to enhance and prolong scent release in topical products. It allows for high fragrance oil loading and gradual release, suitable for cough suppressants and analgesics.

Overview

The PEG-assist encapsulation platform is designed to enhance and prolong scent release in topical products, such as cough suppressants and analgesics. Utilizing a solvent-free PEG-b-PLA micelle/nanoencapsulation approach, this technology dissolves hydrophobic fragrance components and biodegradable polymers in a controlled manner, forming nanodomains that entrap fragrance oils for gradual release. This method supports high fragrance oil loading of over 10%, optimizing scent intensity and duration.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Solvent-free encapsulation utilizing PEG as a processing medium
  • High encapsulation efficiency with uniform particle size
  • Freeze-drying compatibility for stability and scalability
  • Adjustable viscosity via PEG molecular weight and content
  • Applicable to various product forms including creams, sprays, and ointments
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 4, the PEG-assist platform has been demonstrated at the lab scale with plans for further validation phases. These will include incorporating fragrance-loaded carriers into product-relevant prototypes, assessing their physical stability, scent retention, and performance under accelerated conditions.
