Technology
In development
Company

A biodegradable, spray-applied barrier coating for fiber beverage packaging that improves water vapor and oxygen transmission resistance while preserving recyclability and high fiber recovery. Designed to integrate with commercial spray-application processes and support circular packaging by reducing reliance on virgin plastics.

Overview

A biodegradable coating for fiber beverage packaging that enhances barrier performance while supporting a circular packaging approach. The technology reduces water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) and oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and is intended to maintain recyclability through repulpability, targeting high fiber recovery (>85%).

Technical specifications
  • Material Composition: Derived from biodegradable polymer resins, ensuring environmental compatibility.
  • Performance Metrics: Achieves WVTR ≤ 0.31 g/m²/day and OTR ≤ 2.0 cc/m²/day.
  • Application Process: Compatible with commercial spray-application processes, enabling integration into existing production lines.
  • Recyclability: Supports repulping processes with over 85% fiber recovery, maintaining the integrity of recyclable materials.
  • Additional Features: Coating weight is maintained at less than 10% of the paper weight, supporting efficient nanoparticle dispersion.
Technology readiness level

The coating technology is at TRL 5, with ongoing efforts to validate performance in relevant environments. Planned next steps include pilot trials (TRL 6), regulatory support for food contact approval (TRL 7), and scaling for commercial production (TRL 8-9).
