Natural eumelanin from circular bio-feedstocks for sustainable consumer product innovation

Melsa Biotech is developing a scalable biomanufacturing platform for natural eumelanin, a bio-based functional pigment and advanced biomaterial produced from insect-derived biological side streams. Eumelanin is the naturally occurring black/brown biopolymer responsible for broad-spectrum UV-visible absorption, redox activity, metal-binding behaviour and environmental resilience. Our core innovation is the conversion of non-food-chain biological side streams into a high-value, natural melanin ingredient with potential relevance across consumer products, specialty coatings, formulation protection, UV/light management, antioxidant systems, metal-binding applications and sustainable ingredient innovation.

Our current work focuses on extraction, purification and analytical validation of eumelanin from natural insect sources.

We are seeking collaboration with partners interested in natural eumelanin as a multifunctional bio-based ingredient or formulation additive. Near-term compatibility testing and application trials in relevant consumer product matrices. Melsa can provide early samples for evaluation and is seeking partners to co-define performance specifications, regulatory requirements, scale-up targets and application-specific testing protocols.
