Innovative bioplastic coatings reinforced with nano-lignin for enhanced tribological performance, offering a biodegradable alternative for industrial applications like razor blade design. This green technology aims to replace environmentally harmful PTFE-based coatings.

Overview

The proposed solution is a nanoengineered bioplastic coating reinforced with nano-lignin, designed to offer superior tribological performance. This innovative coating is biodegradable and can be applied through a simple solvent casting process, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional PTFE-based coatings. The technology is particularly transformative for industries such as razor blade manufacturing, providing a green, sustainable solution that reduces environmental impact.

Technical specifications

The bioplastic coatings are developed by integrating nano-lignin with biopolymers, inspired by natural processes. Key features include:

  • Biodegradability: Derived from natural sources, these coatings can decompose without leaving harmful residues.
  • Easy application: The coatings are applied using a solvent casting process, which is efficient and cost-effective.
  • Enhanced performance: Reinforced with triboactive nanoadditives, the coatings offer improved microstructure, mechanical, and tribological properties.

The development process involves proprietary compositions and a structured three-phase validation to optimize performance and application.

Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 4, this technology has been validated at a laboratory stage with plans for further development and pilot manufacturing. The ongoing research involves active collaboration with industry partners, ensuring that the final solution meets commercial requirements and environmental standards.
