What it is The LCC is a rapid, objective biomarker assay developed by OMS that quantifies acute stress/engagement by measuring innate immune cell responsiveness in a whole-blood sample. The assay runs from a single finger‑prick or small venous sample and produces a result in ~10 minutes, enabling near real‑time physiological readout of stress, arousal or coping capacity.

Why it matters Objective measure: LCC provides a non‑subjective physiological metric that complements self‑report and behavioral data in contexts where emotional, cognitive or sensory responses matter (e.g., product design, workplace wellbeing, elite performance). Speed and practicality: 10‑minute turnaround allows LCC to be used inside iterative user testing sessions, product experience labs. Sensitivity to meaningful states: LCC tracks rapid changes in immune cell oxidative response linked to acute psychosocial and sensory stressors, making it useful for assessing moment-to-moment reactions. Cross-domain utility: Applicable across human, veterinary and sports settings — one platform for multiple use cases.

How it works (high-level) The rapid test uses a fingerprick blood sample and delivers results in 10 minutes, assessing neutrophil function which is directly related to the stress response.

Why it’s fit for consumer/product testing Temporal alignment: LCC changes linked directly to specific stimuli (single scent, bite of chocolate, interaction flow) during short sessions. Objective preference signals: LCC provides a physiological complement to liking/preference ratings, revealing unconscious stress or comfort responses to guide product optimisation. Iterative design: quick turnaround allows multiple conditions/formulations to be tested.

Proof to date LCC demonstrated across multiple project types: elite athlete monitoring, veterinary/animal welfare studies, corporate stress assessments, and consumer product evaluations. Practical deployments include fragrance and chocolate industry studies

About Oxford MediStress Limited

Oxford MediStress is a medical technology spin-out from the University of Oxford that specializes in stress measurement and diagnosis. The company has developed and commercialized a patented in vitro blood test known as the Leukocyte CopingCapacity (LCC) system. This proprietary technology uses a finger-prick drop of blood to provide an objective, rapid, and quantitative measurement of physiological and psychological stress levels in approximately 10 minutes. By monitoring the reactivity of white blood cells (leukocytes) as bio-indicators, the system offers a real-time point-of-care solution designed to be more sensitive than traditional cortisol-based stress measurements.

The technology is applied across various sectors, including occupational health, professional sports, clinical trials, and veterinary medicine, to help manage and optimize well-being. For example, it is used to monitor stress in corporate executives, athletes, and animals, as well as in high-stress industries like offshore oil and gas through projects such as WorkWeLCC. By providing actionable data, the company aims to help organizations effectively manage employee health, improve training loads for athletes, and enhance animal welfare. Oxford MediStress continues to expand the reach of its LCC platform through research, clinical validation, and government-supported initiatives focused on improving access to occupational health services.
