A novel green emulsion-based method to synthesize cationic chitosan derivatives with improved solubility and surface adhesion, using fatty acids and carboxylic acid-functionalized salts, ideal for diverse applications in liquid formulations.

Overview

Chitosan, a versatile cationic biopolymer, often faces challenges in solubility and adhesion to hydrophobic surfaces, limiting its utility in liquid formulations. This solution introduces an innovative emulsion-based synthesis platform that creates novel chitosan derivatives to overcome these limitations. By grafting chitosan with fatty acids and specific functionalized salts, the method enhances both solubility and surface interactions, paving the way for a wide range of applications.

Technical specifications
  • Green emulsion platform: Utilizes HOBt and EDC·HCl in a water-in-oil system for efficient synthesis without dialysis.
  • Functionalization: Grafting with fatty acids and carboxylic acid-functionalized ammonium and phosphonium salts.
  • Evaluation techniques: NMR and FTIR for structural analysis; DOSY NMR, light scattering, and rheometry for solution behavior; tensiometry and iGC for surface energy; AFM and adhesion testing for deposition.
Technology readiness level

This technology is at a TRL 2, with experimental validation of concept achieved in a laboratory setting. Further development over two years is anticipated to optimize formulations and applications.
