A safer, phosphate-free laundry detergent pod formulated with palm oil-based methyl ester sulfonates (palm MES) as the sole surfactant. The redesigned leaf-shaped pod reduces appeal to young children while delivering effective stain removal with improved biodegradability and lower eco-toxicity.
This project develops laundry detergent pods that address two pressing concerns in the current market: reliance on petrochemical-derived surfactants and the risk that pod designs resembling food items pose to young children. The proposed formulation uses palm oil-based methyl ester sulfonates (palm MES) as the sole surfactant and eliminates harmful phosphates, while the pod is reshaped into a green leaf form to discourage accidental ingestion by children. The result is a more environmentally responsible detergent product that maintains strong cleaning performance.
The formulation science is supported by prior research demonstrating that palm MES can effectively replace petrochemical surfactants in both laundry powder and liquid detergent formulations. The current project is at an early development stage, with a planned one-year study to validate the combined formulation and pod design. The team is actively seeking a research partner to support the study and to provide facilities capable of encapsulating the concentrated liquid detergent within a water-soluble thin membrane.
