Innovative cellulose nanocomposite coating for beverage containers offering superior water, solvent, and acid resistance, while being biodegradable and plastic-free. Aiming to replace traditional plastic coatings, enhancing sustainability and reducing environmental impact.

Overview

The durable cellulose nanocomposite coating is a groundbreaking solution designed to replace traditional plastic coatings on beverage containers. This innovation leverages cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) incorporated into cellulose acetate (CA) to form a nanocomposite coating that is entirely plastic-free and biodegradable. It exceeds the performance of conventional cellulose acetate films by offering enhanced water, solvent, and acid resistance. This technology holds promise for sustainable packaging, aligning with global environmental goals by reducing reliance on plastic containers.

Technical specifications
  • Composition: Incorporates cellulose nanocrystals into cellulose acetate to form a durable nanocomposite.
  • Performance: Exhibits tensile strength between 40 to 70 MPa.
  • Features: Superior resistance to water, solvents, and acids; withstands steam and boiling water for at least 1 hour without deformation.
  • Application: Designed for use as a liquid-resistant coating on food-grade paperboard, replacing polyethylene and other plastic coatings.
  • Standards: Aims to meet critical performance metrics such as solvent and acid/alkali resistance (ASTM D543), water vapor transmission rate (ASTM E96), oxygen transmission rate (ASTM D3985), and biodegradability (ISO 14855).
Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 4, this innovation has undergone laboratory testing, demonstrating its potential and viability as a high-performance, eco-friendly coating for beverage containers. Further validation efforts are focused on optimizing compositions and validating performance metrics under commercial conditions.
