University

A randomized controlled trial using DNA methylation testing to evaluate the effects of multi-micronutrient combinations above RDAs on health indicators such as cognition, immunity, and metabolism. The study involves a 6-month trial to identify biomarkers linking nutrient intake to health improvements.

Overview

This innovative research program aims to explore the effects of multi-micronutrient combinations exceeding Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) using DNA methylation analysis. By integrating the epigenetic clock, this study evaluates how these combinations influence biological and clinical outcomes such as cognition, immunity, mobility, and metabolism. The goal is to identify biomarker cut-points that link nutrient repletion above RDA with measurable improvements in health and aging.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Utilizes DNA methylation clocks like the Elysium Index to assess systemic health changes.
  • Randomized controlled trial design with a 6-month duration in adults aged 40–60.
  • Four study groups: placebo, RDA, 1.5× RDA, and 3× RDA multi-micronutrient formulations.
  • Measures DNA methylation age, NAD levels, and functional outcomes such as cognitive tests, immune titers, mobility, gut health, and metabolic biomarkers.
  • Re-analysis of individual participant data from large studies (COSMOS-Mind, UK Biobank, and NHANES) to validate findings.
Technology readiness level

This project is currently at Technology Readiness Level 5, indicating that the technology is at a stage where it has been validated in a relevant environment, with plans for further development through a double-blind randomized controlled trial.

About Columbia University

Columbia University is a comprehensive private research university in New York City, combining an Ivy League academic profile with globally engaged scholarship and professional education. Its integration with a major hospital system through Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian enables clinical collaboration, access to diverse patient populations, and regulated studies at scale. State-of-the-art laboratories and shared core facilities across the Morningside and Manhattanville campuses support co-located industry projects, while proximity to New York’s finance, media, and healthcare ecosystems streamlines talent pipelines and pilot deployments. Industry engages via sponsored research, affiliate programs, executive education, and convenings that connect faculty expertise with corporate R&D priorities.
