Novel bio-based barrier layers and coatings combining chitosan with PLA/PHA bioplastics via reactive extrusion to improve moisture, oxygen, and antimicrobial performance of sustainable food packaging films.
This solution addresses a critical gap in sustainable food packaging by combining chitosan with commercially available bioplastics such as PLA and PHA to create barrier layers and coatings for bio-based films. Chitosan is a non-toxic, biodegradable, bio-based polymer with well-documented antimicrobial properties, making it attractive as a natural food preservative. However, its high sensitivity to water and low mechanical and thermal stability have limited its standalone use in packaging. By grafting chitosan onto PLA and PHA backbones, the resulting material overcomes these drawbacks and delivers improved moisture barrier performance suitable for packaged dry foods.
The technology supports the growing demand for sustainable packaging alternatives that meet food preservation requirements without relying on fossil-fuel-derived plastics. Potential applications include roll-coated barrier layers for flexible bio-based packaging, cast and blown film structures, and protective coatings for fresh produce that reduce fungal decay and modify internal atmospheres to extend shelf life.

The technology is at an early-to-mid stage of development. Proof of concept has been established through successful reactive extrusion grafting of 1% chitosan onto a PBAT backbone, and similar grafting behavior with PLA and PHA is supported by existing literature. Planned future work involves systematic blending studies across multiple biopolymer matrices and chitosan concentrations, followed by barrier, antimicrobial, and coatability testing. Successful candidates will progress to validation under industrial forming conditions such as VFFS bag-making. The technology is not yet commercially deployed and requires further optimization and validation before market readiness.
Plantee Bioplastics Inc. is a Canadian-based company that develops innovative, bio-based material solutions designed to support a circular economy. The company specializes in creating sustainable alternatives to traditional plastics, such as their BioSwitch technology, a biodegradable plastic designed for the marine industry that mimics the adaptability of living organisms to prevent the formation of ghost fishing gear. Additionally, they have developed ForestFoam, a thermal construction insulation made from low-value forest residues. These solutions are crafted to be 100% biodegradable or recyclable, utilizing renewable, bio-based materials to replace fossil-fuel inputs while maintaining the durability and performance characteristics required for commercial and industrial applications.
These material innovations are aimed at industries seeking to reduce their environmental impact and comply with sustainability mandates. By focusing on renewable resources, such as wood fibers for insulation and biodegradable polymers for marine use, Plantee provides products that offer competitive performance while minimizing plastic waste and carbon output. The company’s efforts include research and development engagements, such as those through Canada’s Innovative Solutions Canada program, to test and commercialize their sustainable materials. Through these initiatives, they support the transition toward a circular bioeconomy, providing builders, contractors, and marine operators with eco-friendly alternatives that align with evolving environmental regulations and building codes.
