ChitiCoat is an all-natural, biodegradable sprayable coating made from nanofibrillated chitin, offering superior oxygen and water vapor barrier properties. It integrates seamlessly with industrial spray nozzles and meets high-performance and recyclability standards.
ChitiCoat is an innovative, environmentally friendly coating solution derived from nanofibrillated chitin, a biopolymer extracted from crustacean waste. This single-component coating is enhanced by grafting hydrophobic lipid groups from epoxidized soybean oil onto the chitin surface, resulting in exceptional oxygen and water vapor barrier properties. ChitiCoat is designed as a stable aqueous dispersion, ensuring compatibility with existing industrial spray nozzles, and providing a hydrophobic barrier when dried. Its optical properties are customizable, making it ideal for branding requirements.
ChitiCoat is currently at a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 5. The product has been validated at the laboratory scale, with ongoing efforts to scale up fermentation processes. Plans are in place for pilot-scale validation and independent third-party verification to ensure performance claims are met. Recyclability certification and regulatory approvals are also being pursued to pave the way for full commercial deployment.
