VERDE Biomaterials is developing advanced athletic footwear cushioning by incorporating cellulose nano-microfibers (CNMF) into EVA foam matrices. This biobased additive enhances durability, stability, thermal insulation, and moisture management without adding weight, reducing both material usage and carbon footprint for sustainable high-performance footwear.

Overview

VERDE Biomaterials is developing a novel approach to athletic footwear cushioning by incorporating cellulose nano-microfibers (CNMF) into conventional EVA foam and other cushioning matrices. CNMF is a biodegradable, biobased material derived from agricultural and industrial waste, processed using VERDE's proprietary platform technology. The goal is to create high-performance cushioning that delivers superior durability, stability, thermal comfort, and moisture management while reducing weight and environmental impact compared to traditional foam-only designs.

The innovation addresses two key challenges in athletic footwear: material performance and sustainability. By leveraging the unique physical properties of CNMF, including high tensile strength, low air permeability, and strong crystalline domains, VERDE aims to reinforce foam composites in a way that extends product lifespan, improves wearer comfort, and reduces the overall carbon footprint of footwear manufacturing.

Technical specifications

Key features and benefits:

  • Enhanced durability: CNMF networks act as crack propagation barriers within the foam matrix, significantly improving strength, modulus, and elongation without increasing weight
  • Thermal insulation: Freeze-dried CNMF in aerogel form provides thermal insulation through its 3D nano-scale pore structure
  • Moisture management: CNMF aerogels offer moisture absorptivity properties that improve wearer comfort during physical activity
  • Lightweight performance: The additive reinforces cushioning without adding material mass, supporting lightweight footwear design
  • Reduced material usage: CNMF as a reinforcing filler can reduce the total amount of foam required, lowering the carbon footprint of the finished product
  • Biodegradable and biobased: Derived from renewable biomass feedstocks such as corn stover and sugarcane bagasse, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil-based additives

How it works:

CNMF is freeze-dried to form aerogels with a confirmed 3D pore structure. The aerogel is then powdered and mixed into EVA at varying loadings. The composite is processed using injection or compression molding techniques compatible with standard footwear manufacturing. The CNMF network distributes stress throughout the foam, preventing crack growth and enhancing mechanical performance. Simultaneously, the porous aerogel structure contributes thermal insulation and moisture absorption properties to the cushioning layer.

Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at the proof-of-concept stage. Planned validation activities include confirming the 3D pore structure of freeze-dried CNMF aerogels, verifying thermal stability of the aerogel within the EVA processing temperature range, fabricating cushioning prototypes via injection and compression molding, and conducting comprehensive testing for strength, thermal stability, air transfer, moisture management, and durability. The project is expected to reach validated prototype status within approximately 12 months. VERDE Biomaterials brings established expertise in scalable CNMF manufacturing, supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, and active collaborations with national laboratories.

About VERDE Biomaterials

VERDE Biomaterials (also known as VERDE Nanomaterials) is a chemical manufacturing company that develops advanced, sustainable materials derived from agricultural and industrial waste. Founded in 2022 and headquartered in Berkeley, California, the company utilizes a proprietary platform technology to transform biomass—such as corn stover, sugarcane bagasse, and other residues—into high-performance cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). These plant-based nanofibers are designed to serve as eco-friendly, biodegradable, and cost-effective alternatives to fossil-based polymers, petrochemicals, and other highly emissive materials. By employing mild chemistry that preserves the natural polymer structure, VERDE produces customizable materials suitable for a variety of industries, including personal care, packaging, automotive composites, textiles, and construction.

The company focuses on driving the circular bioeconomy by addressing technical barriers to the commercial adoption of next-generation bioproducts, such as feedstock variability and process scalability. Supported by funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, VERDE works with national laboratories and participates in innovation accelerators like BEAM Circular to refine its manufacturing processes. Their initial commercial efforts include providing biodegradable rheology modifiers for the personal care industry, aimed at eliminating microplastics in formulations. Through its R&D initiatives and industry collaborations, the company seeks to scale its production capacity and provide sustainable, climate-forward material solutions that perform at industrial scales.
