Innovative catechol-functionalized nanocellulose adhesive coating offers strong, wet-resistant adhesion for cellulose-based packaging, promoting recycling compatibility and sustainability with customizable barrier properties.

Overview

The catechol-functionalized nanocellulose (CFNC)-based adhesive coating is an innovative solution aimed at enhancing cellulose-based packaging. This sustainable adhesive leverages the natural properties of nanocellulose, functionalized with catechol, to provide superior adhesion, especially under wet and humid conditions. It supports single-stream paper recycling systems by being a Recycling Compatible Adhesive (RCA). The coating is solvent-free, without volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it safe for food contact and environmentally friendly. Its modifiability allows it to meet various barrier requirements without compromising its core adhesive capabilities.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Catechol-functionalized nanocellulose enhances adhesion through robust hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking.
  • Solvent-free and VOC-free, ensuring safety and environmental compliance.
  • High surface area-to-volume ratio due to nano-sizing, promoting strong adhesion and cohesion.
  • Ability to modify barrier properties and adapt to specific application needs, such as layer thickness and coating formulation.
  • Suitable for use with nonwood-derived cellulose, processed through autohydrolysis and deep eutectic solvents for lignin removal.
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 3, indicating experimental proof of concept. Further validation and development are ongoing, focusing on optimizing extraction processes, functionalization, and application methods to enhance performance and scalability.

About Universiti Sains Malaysia

Universiti Sains Malaysia is a comprehensive public research university with a multi‑campus footprint anchored in Penang, plus an engineering campus in Nibong Tebal and a health campus in Kelantan. Its base beside Penang’s Bayan Lepas industrial zone and on‑site microelectronics design facilities connect directly to the region’s electronics supply chain, enabling co‑located work and talent pipelines. Integration with the USM Specialist Hospital supports clinical research, trials, and translation. Research is backed by competitive national funding from the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, coordinated through a central research office. Technology transfer is supported by a Centre for Innovation & Consultation and the university’s corporate arm, USAINS Holdings, which channels testing and consultancy to industry.
