Company

A sustainable biorefinery platform utilizing brown algae biomass waste to produce biopolymers for controlled-release nutrient products. This system offers a biodegradable, water-stable matrix that gradually releases nutrients, providing a cost-effective alternative to synthetic fertilizers.

Overview

The brown algae biorefinery developed by the Bioeconomy Science Institute offers an innovative platform for producing sustainable biopolymers from biomass waste. This solution focuses on creating a double biopolymer network using cellulose micro-hydrogel and alginate composites. The result is a biodegradable, water-stable matrix that effectively binds and gradually releases nutrients like urea, ammonium, and potassium salts. This technology provides an eco-friendly alternative to conventional fertilizers by eliminating synthetic polymers and reducing environmental impact.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Biopolymers: Utilizes cellulose micro-hydrogel and alginate to form a robust composite.
  • Controlled Release: Nutrient release is managed through ion exchange and diffusion, with tunable profiles via ionic crosslinking.
  • Biodegradability: Composites are fully biodegradable and water-processed from renewable feedstocks.
  • Customization: Release profiles can be adjusted based on cellulose content, particle size, and additives.
  • Sustainability: Low-energy process aligning with sustainability goals, supporting cleaner agricultural inputs.
Technology readiness level

The current technology readiness level is 3, indicating experimental proof-of-concept. The project aims to advance to validation in field-relevant systems (TRL 5) and pilot-scale demonstration (TRL 7–8). Future steps will involve optimizing formulation parameters, conducting field trials, and ensuring manufacturing consistency and scalability.
