Introducing a biomimetic fiber with a PET core and PDA-coated sheath that mimics natural hair cuticles. This innovation aims to enhance artificial hair styling by improving heat transfer and dyeing capabilities.

Overview

The biomimetic cuticle creation technology represents a breakthrough in artificial hair styling by addressing the limitations posed by traditional smooth synthetic fibers. By employing a core-sheath fiber design, this solution mimics the natural hair cuticle, enhancing the luster and styling potential of artificial hair. The core consists of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), while the sheath is a compatible polymer enhanced with polydopamine (PDA). The technology utilizes a controlled co-extrusion process to create a scale-like surface texture, which is vital for improved heat transfer and chemical adhesion during styling.

Technical specifications

The core of the fiber is made of PET, known for its thermal robustness, while the sheath is a PDA-coated polymer. This configuration enables effective dyeing and UV protection. The key innovation lies in the co-extrusion process, where the differential flow rates between core and sheath materials are precisely controlled to induce surface stresses that form the desired scale-like texture. This is achieved using an elliptical spinneret. The technology also involves a post-spinning PDA functionalization to enhance dye uptake and durability.

Key Features:

  • PET core with PDA-coated sheath for enhanced styling
  • Co-extrusion process with precise flow control
  • Improved dye receptivity and UV protection
  • Surface morphology resembling natural hair cuticles
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 4, indicating that it has been validated in a laboratory setting with ongoing efforts in material formulation, fiber fabrication, and optimization. Future validation steps include comprehensive structure-property analysis and performance benchmarking against natural hair samples.
