Tannins form Metal-Phenolic Networks (MPNs) acting as biodegradable chelants for Fe³⁺ in detergents. They offer high selectivity and performance, minimizing interaction with Ca²⁺, essential for water hardness conditions.

Overview

This innovative solution leverages tannins, plant-based polyphenols, to create Metal-Phenolic Networks (MPNs) that efficiently chelate Fe³⁺ ions. These biodegradable chelating agents are designed for use in modern detergent formulations, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional chelants. The unique structure of tannins provides high binding affinity and selectivity for ferric ions, while minimizing interactions with calcium ions, crucial for compatibility with water hardness levels. This approach not only meets environmental requirements but also enhances the cleaning performance by effectively removing Fe³⁺-based stains.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Metal-Phenolic Network Formation: Tannins form stable networks with Fe³⁺ through metal-ligand coordination and hydrogen bonding.
  • High Selectivity: Demonstrates low affinity for Ca²⁺, ensuring effective performance in hard water conditions.
  • Biodegradability: Meets green chemistry criteria, ensuring environmentally friendly degradation pathways.

Applications:

  • Detergent formulations for enhanced stain removal and fabric protection
