Innovative biodegradable iron chelators designed for effective stain removal in laundry applications. Utilizing computational chemistry, these chelators offer an eco-friendly alternative by preventing stain formation and reducing color intensity, even at low temperatures.

Overview

The development of biodegradable iron chelators represents a significant advancement in laundry care technology. These chelators specifically target Fe(III) ions, which play a crucial role in the formation and intensity of bleachable stains. By leveraging computational chemistry, the new chelators are designed to effectively bind and keep Fe(III) ions in solution, thereby reducing stain visibility or preventing stain formation altogether. This innovation not only enhances cleaning efficiency but also addresses environmental concerns associated with traditional chelators, offering a sustainable alternative for modern, low-temperature laundry processes.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Biodegradable and biobased chelator design, minimizing environmental impact
  • Effective at low temperatures, aligning with modern laundry practices
  • Utilizes computational chemistry to predict ligand interactions and binding constants with Fe(III) ions
  • Focus on pH effect and complexation exchange pathways to optimize performance

The technology employs advanced computational methods, including static and dynamic Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, to identify and synthesize the most promising chelator candidates. These candidates are then subjected to rigorous testing under relevant application conditions to ensure efficacy and biodegradability.

Technology readiness level

Currently, the technology is at TRL 5, indicating that it has been validated in a relevant environment. The next steps involve further synthesis and purification of candidate chelators, followed by application tests according to customer-specific standards, paving the way for potential commercial deployment.
