Beta-aminoisobutyric acid (BAIBA), a skeletal muscle-derived metabokine, shows promise as an orally available anti-obesity intervention by increasing energy expenditure and maintaining muscle mass during weight loss.

Overview

Beta-aminoisobutyric acid (BAIBA) is a metabokine produced by skeletal muscles during exercise, offering potential as an anti-obesity intervention. Research shows that BAIBA can increase basal energy expenditure and promote weight loss by reducing adiposity while maintaining skeletal muscle mass. This physiological compound, which is water-soluble and well-tolerated, could be orally administered to support weight management and improve metabolic health.

Technical specifications
  • Mechanism of action: BAIBA activates adipose tissue browning and hepatic fatty acid beta-oxidation, processes that increase energy expenditure.
  • Benefits: Reduces weight gain and adiposity, preserves skeletal muscle mass, and enhances muscle function.
  • Administration: Orally available as a tablet, making it convenient for experimental medicine approaches.
  • Target outcomes: Increased energy expenditure, improved glucose tolerance, and protection against muscle dysfunction during weight loss.
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 4, BAIBA's effectiveness as an anti-obesity intervention is being validated through a proof-of-concept study involving 20 healthy volunteers. This involves a randomized cross-over design to assess BAIBA's impact on energy expenditure and body composition compared to a placebo.

About University of Aberdeen

Founded in 1495, the University of Aberdeen is a comprehensive public research university in northeast Scotland, serving a mid-sized international student body. Industry engagement is enabled by the Foresterhill health campus, where researchers share a site with NHS Grampian to support clinical studies and rapid translation. Its position in the North Sea energy and offshore engineering cluster offers companies access to faculty expertise, relevant test facilities, and a talent pipeline with industrial placement experience. Research is supported by competitive awards from UK Research and Innovation councils and major UK charities, with additional support from Innovate UK and European programs. A dedicated technology transfer office supports IP, licensing, and spin‑outs, with access to incubator space and investor networks.
