An advanced software tool that automates the optimization of rainwater harvesting systems based on local precipitation and water use needs, enhancing water security and conservation.

Overview

This innovative solution is a cutting-edge software tool designed to automate the optimization of rainwater harvesting systems. It leverages online data sources to calculate and optimize tank sizes and irrigation amounts based on local precipitation, roof area, irrigation needs, and water prices. This tool aims to streamline the design process, making it accessible for companies and entities across the United States to implement efficient rainwater harvesting systems, thus promoting water conservation and enhancing water security, particularly in arid regions.

Technical specifications

The tool automates data collection from online sources, including precipitation data, roof area via aerial imagery, and local water costs. It features an intuitive interface that simplifies the input process, eliminating the need for users to navigate complex spreadsheets. The output provides optimized tank sizes and irrigation amounts tailored to specific locations and needs. Future development plans include a mobile app version for broader accessibility and user engagement.

Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 6, this system has been validated in a prototype form using spreadsheet models. The next phase involves developing a mobile app and conducting beta testing with practitioners across the United States to gather feedback and refine the tool for a wider release.
