Applied development of engineered multi-domain physical systems

Consulting service
University

I develop engineering system solutions for partners leveraging significant university resources and expertise in advanced engineering design methods and test capabilities. I focus on problems where a holistic and methodical systems strategy is required for success. My research group has developed systematic techniques for exploring, understanding, and leveraging complex interactions present in multi-domain systems (e.g., mechanical, thermal, fluid, electronic interactions). I am most well known for my expertise in engineering design optimization methods, including control co-design and spatial packaging of interconnected systems, but bring many other tools and skills to applied projects.

I offer complete hardware-based engineering development services using design and testing strategies tailored to partner needs. We specialize in development and testing of systems as opposed to components. This is valuable for organizations venturing into new technical domains or seeking to level-up their systems development approach. In my lab we test complete multi-domain systems and perform root-cause analysis to pinpoint failure sources in systems with complex interactions. I have cultivated a community of graduate and undergraduate students who engage in this work and have developed models that successfully balance student goals and company needs (e.g., IP).

I am affiliated with multiple centers at UIUC that affords me access to significant test facilities across technical domains. The lab facilities that I run directly have resources for general mechanical and mechatronic system design, fabrication, instrumentation, and testing. Capabilities include CNC machining, metal and resin casting, composite component fabrication (carbon fiber, fiberglass), PCB fabrication, SLA and FDM 3D printing, and other standard machining and metrology capabilities. We also have extensive modeling, simulation, and optimization capabilities that can be utilized where appropriate.

About University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

The University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign is a flagship public research university with large‑scale research capacity and a broad academic portfolio. An on‑campus Research Park co‑locates corporate R&D teams and startups with faculty, while the National Center for Supercomputing Applications provides advanced computing and data capabilities for collaboration. Integration with a regional health system and an engineering‑based college of medicine enables clinical translation, and a long‑standing extension network links campus innovation to partners statewide. Research is supported by competitive federal funding from NSF, NIH, DOE, USDA, and DoD. A technology transfer office streamlines IP, licensing, and startups, complemented by incubators and prototyping in the Research Park.
