Fraunhofer IST offers a plasma-assisted layer deposition process for synthetic rubber surfaces, improving anti-adhesion properties through atmospheric pressure plasma technology. The method is environmentally friendly and customizable for various industrial applications.

Overview

Fraunhofer IST has developed an atmospheric pressure plasma treatment technology aimed at enhancing the anti-adhesion properties of synthetic rubber surfaces. This innovative process utilizes plasma-assisted layer deposition with hydrocarbons or silicon-based monomers to create coatings with customizable surface tension ranging from 20 to 66 mN/m. This flexibility allows industries to tailor the adhesion properties to meet specific application needs, offering significant advantages in manufacturing and design.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Utilizes cost-effective and eco-friendly process gases such as nitrogen or compressed air
  • Capable of depositing layers with varying surface tension to control adhesion
  • Process is adaptable, allowing for the use of different gases and precursors to optimize coating
  • Involves collaboration with industrial partners to ensure quality standards and application-specific results

The process involves several steps including the preparation and cleaning of surfaces, selection of appropriate precursors, plasma treatment under various parameters, and subsequent characterization and testing of adhesion properties. Peel tests are conducted to measure the effectiveness of the coatings in reducing adhesion.

Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 5, indicating that it has been validated in a relevant environment. The next steps involve further testing and customization in partnership with industrial collaborators, aiming at full-scale implementation and system design for specific client needs.
