Innovative aerosolized DNA films provide improved UVA and UVB protection for crops, enhancing with sun exposure. This eco-friendly solution forms transparent, protective layers, potentially reducing crop damage and increasing yield.

Overview

Our groundbreaking technology involves the use of aerosolized aqueous plant DNA mixtures to create transparent submicron thickness DNA films on crops that offer enhanced UVA and UVB protection. These films not only protect crops from harmful solar radiation but also improve their protective capabilities the longer they are exposed to sunlight. This environmentally friendly solution is designed to reduce crop damage and potentially increase agricultural yield.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Utilizes aerosolized aqueous plant DNA mixtures that form thin, transparent films upon drying on crop surfaces.
  • Provides effective protection against UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of UV-induced damage to plants.
  • Unique property of increasing UV absorbance with prolonged sun exposure, enhancing protection over time.
  • The technology is based on previously validated methods of aerosolized liquid drop deposition and DNA film formation.
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 4, this technology has been validated in a laboratory setting and is ready for further development and field testing. We welcome discussions with potential partners to refine and commercialize this innovative solution, bringing it closer to market readiness.

About Binghamton University

Binghamton University is a large, comprehensive public research university in the State University of New York system. Industry collaborates on campus through an advanced technologies complex with shared labs and prototyping facilities, and a health sciences campus adjacent to regional hospital partners. A downtown incubator and maker spaces connect faculty and startups with suppliers and manufacturing in New York’s Southern Tier, while co-op and internship pathways build talent pipelines for corporate R&D. Research is supported by competitive federal funding from agencies such as NSF, NIH, DOE, and DoD, with additional state and industry sponsorship. A dedicated technology transfer office streamlines IP protection, licensing, and startup formation.
