Innovative aerogel-based insulation panels offering R ≥ 11 per inch with fire resistance and cost efficiency. Ambient-dried silica aerogels and clay-polymer interlayers enhance production speed and durability, ensuring suitability for industrial-scale manufacturing.

Overview

This technology introduces advanced aerogel-based insulation panels designed for high-performance construction. By integrating ambient-dried silica aerogels with clay-polymer interlayers, these panels achieve an impressive thermal resistance of R ≥ 11 per inch. The solution combines fire resistance, cost-effectiveness, and rapid production, making it ideal for both new constructions and retrofits. The composite structure's Class A fire safety and moisture resistance ensure longevity and reliability.

Technical specifications
  • Material composition: Thin silica aerogel sheets and clay-polymer interlayers
  • Thermal performance: Ultra-low thermal conductivity (≤13 mW/m·K)
  • Fire safety: Compliant with Class A standards
  • Production process: Pressure-assisted ambient drying and modular lamination
  • Mechanical durability: Enhanced by multilayer lamination design
  • Cost efficiency: Production cost under $1/sqft
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 3, this technology is undergoing development to reach TRL 6. Validation phases include material synthesis, thermal and fire resistance testing, and prototype evaluation to ensure scalability and compliance with industry standards.

About Michigan State University

Michigan State University is a major public land‑grant research university with a comprehensive academic portfolio and a large research enterprise. Industry partners engage through an on‑campus U.S. Department of Energy national user facility and shared core laboratories with user access. The university provides a chemical process scale‑up pilot plant on Michigan’s lakeshore, a research and technology park, and a Grand Rapids health innovation campus linking researchers with clinical partners. A statewide extension network supports field deployment and workforce training across Michigan’s manufacturing corridor. Research is backed by competitive federal funding from NSF, NIH, DOE, USDA, and DoD, while dedicated tech transfer and corporate engagement teams—supported by an affiliated research foundation—accelerate IP, licensing, startups, and sponsored research.
