Five more inspect a TPO roof membrane weld and never cut into it, each using a different physics. Stage of development. Work on construction materials on Halo is split between university programs and companies. 42% of the solutions are in market. Oregon State University has the most, followed by University of Alberta. Sponsored research and co-development are the usual partnering routes, and about 47% of the solutions that state terms offer pilot engagements.
Three trends in construction materials on Halo
Five instruments on one weld. TPO roofing membrane welds drew five inspection entries, each with different physics: machine vision with multi-modal sensing, RGB and thermal imaging under deep learning, an ultrasonic wheel probe, pulsed infrared thermography with no contact, and impulse excitation read by machine learning. Four are universities. A failed roof weld is found by water, which is the problem they are all answering.
Aerogel has gone from lab to retrofit. Five aerogel entries and every one names the application and the fire rating: silica with graphene-doped polymer for retrofit walls at Class A, aerogel made from recycled corrugated board, cellulose nanofibers in exfoliated clay at R-9 per inch, geopolymer and silica aerogel that can be molded. Thermal performance is settled; what they compete on is cost and fire code.
Building materials made of what was thrown away. Recycled corrugated board becomes aerogel, HDPE waste becomes construction stock, shredded PET fiber raises concrete strength, agricultural vegetal waste is pressed into an industrial material, and spent citrus peel becomes a concrete admixture. Construction consumes materials by volume at low margin, which is the only place a waste stream this cheap can go.
