About carbon capture & sequestration

Soil is where most of the work on Halo puts the carbon. Nine entries sequester it in managed land, several of them specifically in lawns and gardens, through rock weathering, zeolites, biochar or grass selection. Four more exist only to measure what is down there, because a credit needs a number. On Halo it spans 7 groups, including carbon into soil and managed land, algae taking up CO2, and rooftop and surface capture.

Stage of development. Work on carbon capture & sequestration on Halo comes mostly from university programs. 28% of the solutions are in market. Montana State University and University of Guelph have the most, followed by Arizona State University. Co-development and sponsored research are the usual partnering routes, and about 53% of the solutions that state terms offer pilot engagements.

Three trends in carbon capture technologies on Halo

Lawns and gardens, nine times over. Enhanced rock weathering, fast-weathering wollastonite, zeolites from rice husk ash, biochar amendments, coal char blended with algae, grass selection, and a porous composite. All are aimed at managed land and several name lawns and gardens explicitly. It is a large, distributed, privately owned carbon sink that nobody currently measures.

The roof is the other surface. Six entries capture or convert CO2 on a building. A modular rooftop unit with oxygen enrichment, panels making formic acid, plasmonic nanoparticles in a film converting under sunlight, a tile producing hydrogen alongside capture, a photocatalytic coating generating a credit, and a paint additive taking CO2 and VOCs out of a room.

Four entries measure, and that is the product. Ionic liquid sensors built to survive burial, microbial sensors reporting through IoT, subsurface spectroscopy reading organic carbon in place, and a multi-depth long-term network. Soil carbon is only worth money when it is verified, and verification is harder and more contested than the sequestration itself.

Frequently asked questions

What are carbon capture technologies?

Carbon capture and sequestration covers taking CO2 out of the air or a flue and keeping it out. It spans soil carbon in managed land including lawns and gardens, rooftop and surface systems that capture or convert CO2 in place, algae cultivated to absorb it, biochar and carbon materials, the measurement that turns stored carbon into a credit, and routes that convert CO2 into a saleable product.

What are examples of carbon capture technologies?

Five examples of carbon capture technologies on Halo include:

  • Grass selection and soil amendment chosen for what a lawn will hold. (Texas A&M University, College Station)
  • Microalgae grown to sequester CO2 and yield biomass at the same time. (Aligma Pte. Ltd.)
  • A modular rooftop unit capturing CO2 and water and enriching oxygen. (Decarb-Air Pty Ltd)
  • Ionic liquid gas sensors built to survive being left in soil. (Oakland University)
  • Modular biochar packs turning contaminants into something with a use. (Capture Tech)

What are the latest carbon capture innovations?

The most recently updated carbon capture technologies on Halo include:

  • Modular electrocatalysis turning CO2 into carbon-negative ethylene glycol. (RenewCO2)
  • Infers the carbon fixation rate from pH, so no dedicated sensor is needed. (Montana State University)

Which companies and suppliers are developing carbon capture technologies?

There are 568 organizations with carbon capture technologies on Halo, 81 of them universities and research institutions. Among them are Texas A&M University, College Station, National Root Crops Research Institute, and Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos. Most offer co-development or sponsored research.
