About fiber technology

Two applications pull the work on Halo. Six entries build a nonwoven from a digital model, using melt electrowriting, electrohydrodynamic writing or micro-CT in a closed loop, and six make a synthetic hair fiber, from PBT melt spinning to wheat gluten to ionic liquid engineered keratin. On Halo it spans three groups: nonwovens built from a digital model, synthetic and bio-based hair fibers, and fibers from a waste stream.

Stage of development. Work on fiber technology on Halo is split between university programs and companies. 37% of the solutions are in market. Co-development and sponsored research are the usual partnering routes, and about 36% of the solutions that state terms offer licensing.

Three trends in fiber technology solutions on Halo

Synthetic hair is a materials problem. Six entries make or repair a hair fiber, and they disagree entirely on the route: PBT melt spinning, hierarchically structured thermoplastic elastomer, wheat gluten with sodium alginate, keratin engineered with ionic liquids, a biomimetic cuticle built during spinning, and cross-linking that repairs damaged keratin. The target property is the cuticle, and nothing reproduces it easily.

Nonwovens specified, not tuned. Six entries make a nonwoven from a digital model: melt electrowriting, in-gel electrohydrodynamic direct writing, multi-scale hybrid fabrication, and a micro-CT loop feeding back to the compiler. Conventional nonwoven processes are adjusted empirically, and this cluster exists to make the structure specifiable in advance.

The waste stream is a fiber source. Three entries spin a fiber out of something already discarded: cellulose recovered from citrus juicing, agricultural residues fractionated into pectin binders and cellulose fibers, and hypoallergenic wheat gluten turned into an industrial biopolymer. Wheat gluten shows up twice on this tree, once as a fiber feedstock and once as artificial hair.

Frequently asked questions

What are fiber technology solutions?

Fiber technology covers making a fiber and arranging it. It spans digitally designed nonwoven fabrication, synthetic and bio-based hair fibers, fibers drawn from agricultural waste, keratin chemistry, and the measurement and modeling of what results. Textile manufacturers, hair product companies and nonwoven converters are the buyers. On Halo the work leans toward nonwovens built from a digital model, synthetic and bio-based hair fibers, and fibers from a waste stream.
