Situation
Wella Company’s R&D team is constantly racing against two competing pressures: the need to move fast on highly specialized, niche technical problems, and the reality that their existing supplier network simply doesn’t reach far enough. When Wella’s chemists needed partners for complex materials science challenges, the traditional path was slow, unpredictable, and geographically limited. Searches could stretch six months or more, and often ended with the same familiar faces from the same familiar places.
The team was also stretched thin. With dozens of competing priorities at any given time, Wella’s innovation leads couldn’t afford to spend months hunting for the right external collaborators. As one team member described it plainly:
It's like there are 30 things you could touch equally in parallel at number-one priority. We need this, but we don't know how to manage it.
Mathias HerrleinVice President R&D, Wella CompanyThey needed a way to find the right partners faster and to do it without tipping off competitors on sensitive strategic areas.
The approach
Focused requests, kept confidential
Wella partnered with Halo to replace ad hoc outreach with structured, targeted innovation requests: privately posted briefs that reach a global network of researchers, startups, and commercial suppliers without revealing the company’s identity or strategic intent.
Working closely with their Halo customer success team, Wella launched multiple focused requests targeting niche technical challenges: areas where deep expertise is rare and existing supplier relationships simply don’t cover the ground. Each brief was carefully scoped to attract the right types of partners while keeping Wella’s specific application areas and strategic intent confidential.
Halo’s team handled brief drafting and scouting outreach, significantly reducing the burden on Wella’s already-stretched R&D team. Private request settings ensured Wella’s name and focus areas remained confidential throughout the process.
The results
Partners found faster, from places they weren’t looking
Across multiple requests launched in late 2025, Wella’s team received high-quality proposals within days of going live, including during the holiday period when traditional outreach would have stalled entirely.
Response times consistently beat expectations, with the Wella team committing to 72-hour turnaround on proposal reviews, a cadence that kept the pipeline moving and signaled to innovators that Wella was a serious, responsive partner.
I think we got three more proposals today. Which is insane.

A genuinely new partner universe
Halo surfaced partner types and geographies that Wella’s existing network wouldn’t have reached. Respondents included a leading German research institute, a university-affiliated startup in the US Midwest, and commercial-stage companies in the UK: a mix that spanned early-stage academic research all the way to partners with samples ready to ship.
The diversity wasn’t incidental; it was the point. Several of the most compelling proposals came from organizations applying expertise developed in entirely different industries, bringing fresh scientific approaches to Wella’s challenges that traditional beauty and personal care suppliers would never have surfaced.
One is a company tied to a university in the Midwest, and the other is in the UK. We moved forward with one who sent samples already. It has better properties and is from more natural materials.
Sarah OstreshSenior Scientist, Nail Innovation, Wella CompanyDiscovery to deal in weeks, not months
The most telling measure of impact was how quickly partnerships moved from proposal to active collaboration. Within weeks of requests closing, partners were already shipping samples for hands-on technical evaluation. Another was simultaneously progressing through NDA discussions, a formal step that typically takes months to reach through conventional sourcing channels.
Across requests, Wella went from problem statement to physical samples in hand in under eight weeks. Early technical results showed promising performance characteristics, with the team noting improvements over existing solutions.
Looking ahead
Building a more open innovation culture with global reach
Wella’s use of Halo has since expanded beyond targeted requests. The team is now exploring Discover, Halo’s AI-powered matching feed that surfaces current solutions from across the network and connects them directly to the people building them. They’re also evaluating PulseChecks, a one-sentence way to signal what you’re exploring and invite responses from relevant innovators, particularly valuable for sensitive strategic areas where a public request would reveal too much.
New request topics are already in the pipeline for 2026, and the team is planning a branded open innovation call to capture breakthrough ideas from outside their usual frame of reference, a move designed to surface technologies they haven’t yet thought to look for. As Mathias Herrlein put it:
Really getting a new technology we never thought of, and getting pushed in another direction. That would be a huge success.
