High-performance PHA blend for sustainable lightweight packaging

Technology
Conceptual
Company

A high-performance PHA blend enhanced via reactive extrusion for sustainable, lightweight packaging. The approach improves thermal-mechanical performance, reduces density, and supports compatibility with existing packaging applications. Formulations can include PLA, PBAT, green additives, foaming agents, and plasticizers, with initial emphasis on food-contact materials and scalable expansion to broader packaging uses.

Overview

A high-performance PHA blend is formulated for sustainable, lightweight packaging. Using a patented reactive-extrusion process, biopolymer properties are enhanced through controlled degradation to improve polymer reactions and increase melt flow. The resulting material targets replacement of traditional fossil-based plastics with a more eco-friendly alternative aligned to sustainability objectives.

Technical specifications
  • Reactive extrusion: Uses controlled degradation to improve polymer reactions and increase melt flow index.
  • Blend components: Includes green additives, foaming agents, plasticizers, and biopolymers such as PLA and PBAT.
  • Performance enhancements: Delivers significant density reduction while maintaining thermal-mechanical integrity.
  • Application potential: Initially focused on food contact materials, with scalable applications in broader packaging sectors.
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 2, the technology is in the development stage, with ongoing lab-scale production and characterization. A flexible program is planned to advance to pilot-scale production, with a projected validation timeframe of 9–12 months.

About EggPlant

EggPlant is an Italian startup that specializes in the production of advanced bioplastic-based solutions through a proprietary, zero-waste technology. By utilizing wastewater from the agri-food industry as a raw material, the company produces polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), a fully bio-derived and biodegradable bioplastic. This process is built on principles of circular economy and biomimicry, effectively repurposing industrial waste into high-performance materials. Beyond the core bioplastic production, the company has developed integrated technology platforms that include conductive bioplastics, active packaging, and applications for sectors such as electronics, biomedicine, agriculture, and aerospace.

This technology addresses critical environmental challenges by simultaneously mitigating issues related to wastewater disposal and reducing reliance on traditional hydrocarbon-based plastics. By transforming waste into a valuable resource, EggPlant supports industries in achieving greater economic and environmental sustainability. The company, headquartered in Polignano a Mare, Puglia, operates with the vision of eliminating the conventional concept of waste, aiming to contribute to a balanced and responsible development model for both industry and society.
